SUMMER BIRD TO WORK SUNDAY BETWEEN SECOND AND THIRD RACES

Belmont, Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Summer Bird, the leading candidate for an Eclipse Award in the male 3-year-old division, reunites with regular rider Kent Desormeaux tomorrow for a five-furlong workout between Oak Tree’s second and third racesâ€"not the third and fourth as previously reported--in preparation for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at 1 1/4 miles on Nov. 7. Desormeaux will be in from New York where he rode at Belmont Park on Saturday.

Desormeaux, Oak Tree’s leading rider from 1990 through 1992, has ridden Summer Bird in his last four races, including the three aforementioned victories. Their lone setback came when they finished second in the Grade I Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 2, six lengths behind super filly Rachel Alexandra.

Summer Bird galloped a mile and a half on Pro-Ride Saturday under the watchful eye of trainer Tim Ice. “He’s doing good,” Ice said. “He’ll breeze tomorrow.” Added private clocker Toby Turrell on the son of Birdstone: “His chestnut coat was glistening in the sun. He couldn’t look better.”

In other Breeders’ Cup news:

Oak Leaf Stakes winner Blind Luck worked six furlongs in 1:11.80 on Pro-Ride at Santa Anita Saturday under Tyler Baze, while Chocolate Candy went the same distance with Joel Rosario aboard in 1:14.40. “Super,” is how Jerry Hollendorfer assistant Dan Ward described the moves. “Chocolate Candy finished very well. They’re ready.”

Blind Luck is pointing to the $2 million Grey Goose Juvenile Fillies at 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 6, while Chocolate Candy goes in the $1 million Dirt Mile on Nov. 7.

In other Breeders’ Cup works on Pro-Ride Saturday: Cocoa Beach ($2 million Ladies’ Classic at 1 1/8 miles on Nov. 6) worked four furlongs for Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor in :47.60; Beautician (Juvenile Fillies) went five furlongs for trainer Ken McPeek in :59 flat; Fatal Bullet ($2 million Sentient Jet Sprint at six furlongs on Nov. 7) went five furlongs in :58.80 for trainer Reade Baker; It Tiz (Juvenile Fillies) went six furlongs in 1:13.20 for trainer Mark Glatt; Norfolk Stakes runner-up Pulsion (Juvenile) went six furlongs in 1:15.40 for trainer Patrick Biancone; and Black Astor ($500,000 Marathon at 1 1/2 miles on Pro-Ride Nov. 6) went six furlongs for trainer Lisa Lewis in a bullet 1:11.60.

“Magical Fantasy could not have looked any better all the way around,” said Turrell, in assessing the most impressive drills. “Ferneley’s last two works have been very powerful. He couldn’t be any more ready.”

Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird galloped two miles Saturday on Pro-Ride and will work five furlongs Monday, trainer Chip Woolley Jr. said.

Defending Filly & Mare Sprint champion Ventura worked six furlongs on Hollywood Park’s Cushion Track Saturday in 1:12.20 for the $1 million Sentient Jet Filly & Mare Sprint at seven furlongs on Nov. 6, while Visit (Filly & Mare Turf) went four furlongs on the same surface in :49.60. The English-bred Proviso worked four furlongs for the Ladies’ Classic in :49.60. All three are trained by Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel and were ridden by Jose Dominguez.

“Bobby was happy with the works,” said his long-time assistant, Humberto Ascanio.

FINISH LINES: Jockey Cosme Rivera suffered a dislocated right elbow when his mount, Carat for C.C., stumbled after the start of Friday’s fourth race. He was treated at Arcadia Methodist Hospital and will be examined on Monday by an orthopedic surgeon, according to his agent, Jeff Metz, who said the rider will be out for an undetermined period . . .
